At the outbreak of the Great War, the New Zealand High Commissioner, Sir Thomas MacKenzie, called a meeting of New Zealanders in London with the hope of forming a group who would provide services and assist New Zealand soldiers who were wounded or sick, providing them with comforts, visiting them in hospital and securing accommodation for convalescents and helping them to keep in touch with relatives.
The New Zealand War Contingent Association was formed at that meeting.
