About this objectCertificate of appreciation; a large, printed and handwritten certificate presented to Private Thomas F Ward by the Owaka and District Patriotic Society, in appreciation of his part in the Great War. The lithographed illustrations include a moa, lion, ferns, pillars, and Victoria, the Roman goddess of victory, holding a golden trident and laurel wreath. The handwritten text reads: 'Owaka and District Patriotic Society. Presented to the next of kin of 38324 Private Thomas J Ward, 21st Reinforcements, N.Z. Expeditionary Force. Killed in action, 5th November, 1918. On behalf of the residents of Owaka and surrounding district we desire to pay a tribute to the memory of Private Thomas J Ward who nobly took his part in the Great War. Without thought of personal gain, he fought, suffered and made the supreme sacrifice for New Zealand and the Empire.
