About this object A black and white photograph of Trooper Samuel James Logan McKelvie who served in World War One at Gallipoli with the Otago Mounted Rifles. It was likely taken in Cairo in 1915 prior to the Gallipoli Campaign.
Logie survived the War and returned to Mataura. He married Gwen Murrell in 1923 they had two children Ian and Avis. Logie established a thriving butchers shop and was a forward thinker with a strong sense of public service serving as a Councillor and then Mayor of the Mataura Borough. He was also on the board of the Mataura Licensing Trust and the executive of the local RSA. Logie died in 1969 having been a Mataura man his whole life.
