John's parents lived in Mataura but he was working in Invercargill as a clerk for John Edmonds Limited when he enlisted in the New Zealand Army in February 1916. John was shot in the right thigh and both hands in the Somme on 27 September 1916. His injuries resulted in being classified unfit for further service and he was shipped home in November 1917. He then received further treatment in Wellington and Invercargill Hospitals before being formally discharged in April 1918.
