He enlisted in the New Zealand Army in February 1916 and on 27 September 1916 was shot in the right thigh and both hands during the battle of the Somme. This resulted in being classified unfit for further service and being shipped home in November 1917. Further medical treatment followed in Wellington and Invercargill Hospitals before John was discharged from the Army in April 1918.
He died on 17 April 1922. His obituary (Mataura Ensign, 21 April) notes that: 'the subsequent effects of his wound gradually undermined his constitution' and lead to his final illness and death.
