About this objectA copy of a black and white photograph capturing a moment in a funeral procession heading towards the Mataura Cemetery along Crawford Road. The cortège was for World War One veteran Thomas Shepherd. Tom was only 25 years old when he died in November 1923.

According to the book 'Mataura: City of the Falls' (pg. 457) funerals in those early years were attended by all the local men who would all follow the horse-drawn hearse up to the cemetery. It was the accepted thing that women did not attend the burial.
